One driver under the spotlight at Hockenheim will certainly be Maya Weug. The 22-year-old is to make her Euroformula Open debut with BVM Racing.
Born in Spain to a Dutch father and a Belgian mother, Maya holds three citizenships, is fluent in five languages, and has a very solid curriculum. After shining in karting, she made her debut in F4 in 2021 and then moved to Formula Regional. Along the way, she has been a front-runner in the F1 Academy, conquering a final 3rd position in 2024 and 2nd in 2025, on top of four race wns in total.
She is the first female driver to join the Ferrari Driver academy program, and she has made this year her debut in GT racing, in the Belcar.
Maya will be the eleventh female driver to compete in the F3-based series by GT Sport, launched back in 2001 as the Spanish F3 Championship before becoming the Euro F3 Open and the Euroformula Open.
Before her, Maria de Villota, Ianina Zanazzi, Natacha Gachnang, Carmen Jordá, Vicky Piria, Michela Cerruti, Valeria Carballo, Tatiana Calderón, Vivien Keszthélyi and Juju Noda raced in the series where girls have often played a prominent role. In 2023,
Juju Noda from Japan became the first girl to win an EFO race at Paul Ricard, joining the very selected club of women having conquered a win in an international formula series, which includes Desiré Wilson (British F1), Danica Patrick (Indycar), Ana Beatriz and Pippa Mann (Indy Lights), and Jamie Chadwick (British F3 and Indy NXT).
