José Garfias (Motopark) takes authoritative maiden win on the wet

In a wet Sunday morning, with treacherous track conditions, the day of José Garfias arrived. The personable Mexican took an authoritative maiden Euroformula win, leading the race fom lap one. The Motopark driver was clearly elated: “At last! After being close to it a number of times, victory has arrived. It was tricky conditions today, but first part of the race was perfect and could build a good gap. In the second part, my rain tyres overheated, I tried to preserve them and catch all wet patches, and it worked out”.

‘Joss’ beat Michael Shin and Yevan David in an all-Motopark podium, with Kucharczyk (BVM) finishing fourth.

THE RACE – The track is completely wet ahead of Race 2, with Rashid in pole in the reversed grid, flanked by Barrichello. While the Brazilian has a poor start, Rashid keeps the lead ahead of Garfias, Shin and Pearson but is passed by the µmexican before the end of the first lap. In the meantime a contact between Green and Stack ahead of turn2 has sent the American into the wall.

Garfias pulls away and leads by 3 seconds after three laps, followed by Shin, Rashid, David who has progressed well from last row, Pearson, Kucharczyk and Barrichello. David, Pearson and Kucharczyk will pass Rashid, with shortly after, the Pole taking fourth from Pearson. In the lead, Garfias increases his advantage to 4.5 seconds by mid-race.

In the closing phases, Garfias struggled with his tyres but kept first position ahead of Shin, David and Kucharczyk, with de la Torre charging up to fifth ahead of Pearson and Barrichello, who made an off-track in the last lap.
