Four-way title battle goes down to the wire at Monza

Four-way title battle goes down to the wire at Monza

The moment of truth has come: the 2025 Euroformula Open will have a Champion this weekend, but before that, many things will happen. The exciting maiden season with the new Tom’s-powered Dallara 324 is coming to an end at Monza, and the venerable and fast ‘Temple of speed’ is preparing to host a superb four-way battle for the title.

With a maximum of 76 points still to be awarded (and the three worst results to be dropped), many scenarios are possible in the course of the weekend at the Autodromo Nazionale, which, exceptionally, will see Race 1 and Race 2 take place on Saturday, and only Race 3 on Sunday, owing to the 3-hour GT Open 500.

The season has offered great racing and closely fought duels, yielding at the end a final title battle with four drivers still having mathematical chances to seize the crown.

Leading the standings is Tymek Kucharczyk, the young and fast Pole who has taken the helm of the rankings after the initial rounds. The BVM Racing driver has 5 wins and 5 poles to his credit and a capital of 321 points (312 net points, currently).

His closest opponent is Michael Shin, the Korean of Team Motopark, who has performed a very consistent season, netting four wins. He is 23 points behind, but 16 in net points at the moment.

The third in contention, and also a Motopark driver, is Yevan David, the Sri Lankan talent who has behind him a whole country supporting the first racing hero of the Asian nation. David had a strong start to the season before having to face some setbacks, but he remains fully in the race for the title, 28 points behind the top, and with the advantage of having already three ‘no point’ results, thus not having to discard any points.

Behind the three main candidates, there is an outsider, José Garfias, the personable Mexican of Team Motopark. Lagging 62 points behind Kucharczyk (56 in net points), the Mexican, who has taken three wins so far, is still mathematically in the race, but would need a combination of very favorable circumstances to reach the goal.

Monza, though, will offer much more than the title battle, with many drivers aiming to close the season in style. Fifth in the standings and with two race wins already in his bag, Ed Pearson will lead the charge of Nielsen Racing, which has had a terrific maiden season in the series.

In Monza, the British squad will again entrust its two other cars to rookies. Romania’s Luca Viisoreanu is back for a second Euroformula outing, after debuting successfully in Austria with Motopark,  while 17-year-old Taxiarchis Kolovos from Greece is making is a rookie at this level.

BVM Racing is also completing its ranks with young talents. Enzo Yeh, from Taiwan, will be in his second outing, and Venezuela’s Alessandro Famularo in his third.

At Motopark, the ranks are completed by three regular drivers, who have already proved their abilities. Fernando Barrichello will want to close his two-year tenure in the series with a third success, while American Everett Stack seeks a second win and to secure runner-up honours in the Rookies’ Trophy, behind Yevan David. On his side, Mexico’s Diego de la Torre will aim for a top result to confirm the good things shown throughout the year.
