Enzo Yeh signed a remarkable hat-trick at spa-Francorchamps, winning also Race 3 which closed the Belgian weekend and was as chaotic as possible given the changing weather conditions. The Taipei-born driver of Team Motopark made a significant leap forward in the overall standings that he now leads with a 49-point gap. “I am very happy of what I achieved this weekend in such a legendary track and in these conditions”, said soberly the Taiwanese.
US racer Everett Stack (Motopark) was second and Argentina’s Gino Trappa (Drivex) completed the podium on top of taking Rookies’ honours.
The race started behind safety car given the rain, with Dobrzanski in pole ahead of Feldmann, de la Torre and Herrera. Immediately, a number of drivers pitted to put on slick tyres. Those included Yeh and Famularo (later sanctioned with a drive-through for pitting at the end of formation lap), Dobrzanski, Feldmann, De la Torre, Stack and Fiorentino. This completely changed the physiognomy of the race, with Herrera leading in lap 2 ahead of Koller, Carrasquedo, Nandan, Trappa, Castillo and Ferrazzano.
Clearly, those on slick tyres advanced through the field at high speed, and Yeh was already in the lead by lap 3 before serving the sanction, ahead of Castillo and Ferrazzano. Changes continued to happen as all the other drivers pitted, with gaps increasing substantially.
By lap 9, when things ‘returned to normal’, Yeh had a 25-second advantage on Famularo, in fight with Stack. The American won the duel, with Trappa also passing Famularo and De la Torre taking fifth.
